This is a reprise of Carl Orff's ever popular and appealing Carmina Burana, performed for the first time at the Bankhead Theater, which is Livermore's new performing arts center. Joining us again is the Cantabella Children's Chorus, members of the San Francisco Concert Chorale, and other singers from around the Bay Area. In addition, the chorus is accompanied by twin pianos, percussion and professional soloists. Carmina Burana, a well-known favorite that tugs at all emotions, is an exciting opener for the Chorale during the new theater's inaugural season. Click here to learn about ordering tickets.
This concert brings lighter works to the audience, anchored by Schubert's lovely Mass in G, with string quartet, organ, and professional soloists. In addition, experience the power of familiar spirituals with new arrangements; and enjoy a variety of part songs from the English Renaissance period to the Romantic. VCC's own accompanist, Daniel Glover, will share his masterful talent at the piano in this annual benefit concert for the chorale. The program will be in two parts. The first part features religious works by Liszt, including Benediction of God in Solitude, which is one of the most beautiful meditations in all of the piano repertoire. Also, Liszt's two Franciscan Legends, which tell the stories of two events in the lives of St. Francis of Asissi and St. Francis of Paola. The program will open with one of Liszt's most unusual transcriptions of two choral works, including the ever popular Ave Verum Corpus by Mozart, entitled In the Sistine Chapel. The second half of the concert features three pieces by Nicolai Medtner, and Rachmaninoff's brilliant Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, as revised by his friend Vladimir Horowitz.
