Also, Liszt's two Franciscan Legends, which tell the stories of two events in the lives of St. Francis of Asissi and St. Francis of Paola. Gioachino Rossini
This concert will feature Gioachino Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. This "Little Solemn Mass" was written in 1863. He called it the "last of my sins of old age"; and it was described by Napolean III as neither little nor solemn! Rossini originally scored it for 12 voices, soloists, two pianos and a harmonium. The harmonium is a small instrument similar to an organ, but uses reeds that give it a sound similar to an accordian. The organist typically pumps foot pedals to operate the bellows. This work was originally performed in 1864, and an orchestral version was performed in 1869, three months after Rossini's death. Click here to learn about ordering tickets.
